It was created by three dads - Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum - who wanted to find a fun activity for their bored kids during the summer. Since then, the game has gained popularity not only in the US and Canada but also internationally, with many European and Asian countries also embracing the sport.

When playing pickleball, each player needs a pickleball paddle. These paddles are smaller than tennis racquets but larger than ping-pong paddles. Originally made from wood, modern paddles are now made from lightweight composite materials like aluminum and graphite. Additionally, players require a net and a unique ball with holes in it, available in various colors like white, yellow, and green.

Pickleball can be played in singles or doubles, with doubles being the most common format. The rules for both singles and doubles are the same, with players following a serve-and-volley style of play.

The serve in pickleball follows certain guidelines. The server's arm must be moving in an upward arc when striking the ball, and the paddle should not make contact with the ball above waist level. The serve must also land within the confines of the opposite diagonal court, and only one serve attempt is allowed per server.

Scoring in pickleball is straightforward. Points are only scored by the serving team, and games are typically played to 11 points, with a two-point advantage to win. The two-bounce rule applies, which means that the receiving team must let the served ball bounce before returning and then the serving team must also let it bounce before returning. This rule extends rallies and creates an exciting gameplay dynamic.
